Brazilian remanufacturing is booming. South America's largest and most populous country uses more than 12 million printer cartridges a year, half of that number split between compatibles and remanufactured cartridges. This $US 260 million market in Brazil consists of approximately 18,000 companies, and provides around 72,000 jobs. Recharger spoke with Rodrigo Lopes, general director of Magic Laser, a prominent supplies distributor with offices in São Paulo and Jacanã. Lopes discusses the Brazilian market and the challenges and triumphs Magic Laser has seen in the industry since the company was founded in 2003.
Recharger: What are your strengths as an organization?
Magic Laser Distribuidora was founded by people who saw great growth potential in the printing market. In 2003, Brazil didn’t have good technology and the cartridge refilling was seen as an “illegal” activity. Due to the emergence of companies like Magic Laser, this idea began to change and today, people understand the high-quality work of the distributors. Our product line consists of toner and inkjet refill supplies and compatible cartridges. We seek, as our main objective, to widen the options to our customers, providing from packaging and labels to whole cartridges, remanufacturing kits and even partnerships with printer OEMs, having a complete line as a differential. We work with customers from all over Brazil, generally smaller-sized remanufacturing companies, computers supplies stores and printing companies that serve their local markets and a smaller portion of end users.
